Antonio Selunda’s childhood story
‘When I was a child I liked it all the time to go hunting with my grandfather. He also taught me how to catch guinea fowls and also which food is edible. So we collected some food and honey in the bush.
I thought it is very easy to collect honey or go hunting. So I stayed at home and my grandfather went alone on a hunting trip. He killed a small springbok.
The next day I went with him. It was very hot. While we walked in the bush I finished my bottle of water. We had not yet found any game and I started crying, but my grandfather calmed me down. By that time it was already 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
We walked further and further into the bush; my grandfather in front and I followed him. Suddenly he made a click that told me to sit down. He told me not to move at all. He took his arrow out of his quiver, slowly put it in the bow and shot a duiker dead. He took the animal on his shoulder and we went home.
At home he told me not to wash before we had eaten the meat. He put the meat in a pot and started cooking. When he had finished cooking he took the heart of the duiker out of the pot, cut it into two halves and gave me one piece to eat.
The meaning of that is that I must learn how to hunt and collect food in the bush.’
