The Botswana Book Project

2010-01-31 09:47:43

The Botswana Book Project was formed in 1998 by Pam Shelton to answer the immediate library needs of northern Botswana. Since then it has served as a catalyst for literacy and library development throughout the country.

The primary function to date has been to supply donated books and literacy materials to the Botswana people through their schools and other educational institutions. These resources are fundamental for developing an educated and informed nation (VISION 2016).  The materials are secured from various donors such as Books for Africa and the shipping costs paid by Golden Sun Services, the administrator of the Botswana Book Project.   These materials are offered freely by the Botswana Book Project to the schools with a token contribution to help defray the shipping costs.  The materials may include used books, computers, and school and health curriculum support items such as art supplies.

The Botswana Book Project has also played a key role in assisting schools and communities in creating libraries.
This is being achieved by:

    -Conducting training workshops
    -School and PTA’s informational sessions
-Development of library and reading promotional materials.
-Promotion of the Regional Library Committee
-Establishment of a permanent Book Project storage facility at Maun Senior Secondary School.

In 2007, Pam Shelton was awarded the James Patterson Page-Turner Par Excellence Award for her work in promoting reading. For more news on the project - and to donate - go to: www.botswanabookproject.org
