KPN looking for trainee editors and contributors for this website

Trainee Editors: Job Description

Candidate must speak a San language and English or Afrikaans and be involved in community or organizations. This is a freelance position involving only about ten hours of work per month, but could lead to further work for the project. Payment will be an hourly rate and separately for items and photographs that are used on the site. We are thinking of this as a job skills project where training will be offered that will be useful in applying for other positions.

Phase One: Technical Training Courses – Winter Workshops 2010
•    Training in basic computer work
•    Writing for the website.
•    Working with email
•    Using the Internet.
•    Digital photography and sending photographs by email.
•    Keeping the computer running

From the participants on phase one, we will identify candidates for further training in phase two when they will act as trainee editors working by email with Lesley Beake, the manager of the KPN website and others. Technical help will be available by email from friends of the project.

Phase Two: Working with the website
We will give as much help as possible in getting the successful candidates set up with computers and on the Internet. We are working right now on funding for that.

Payment will be R500 per month for 5 hours of work. In addition, there will be a fee of R100 per item published on the KPN website and R50 per digital picture accepted on the site.

Note: These rates are not high, but will apply during the basic training period and will include training, help and editing by email.

Responsibilities:
•    Submitting a minimum of five items per month from the area where the trainee editor lives.
•    Encouraging contributions from other organizations or individuals in the area
•    Interacting with the manager / editor by email
•    Learning on-the-job skills around editing and writing

Phase Three
Bu the end of 2011 we hope to have identified a San Manager / Editor who will be able to take over the task of running the website during 2012. This is also not a full-time job. It would remain freelance and involve 20-40 hours per month. Rate to be negotiated. The successful candidate would work with the other deputy managers to give full coverage to San matters.
