We need help to find or buy 5 computers!

2010-06-05 12:20:04

KPN are looking for five computers – ideally exactly the same – for our trainee editors and contributors. Alternatively, we can buy what we need for the amount of R20 000. Read about the KPN Winter Workshops below for more details!

We can give the workshops with existing facilities and some help from our friends, but we need to find five computers that can be permanently available for Internet and website use at:

•    Tsumkwe (Namibia)
•    Windhoek (Namibia)
•    Platfontein (N Cape)
•    !Khwa ttu (W Cape)
•    Botswana (yet to be identified)

There will be additional links with the Living Landscape project in Clanwilliam. All computers will be kept in a secure base as part of a community or organization system.

The computers would ideally be new and should be identical so that distance support (from friends of the project in Ireland) would be feasible and so that the people working with them can confer. Well-meaning donations of used computers often carry with them the problems that saw them replaced in the first place.

Training:
We will be working with groups of between 5 – 10 participants and they will be given basic training in:

•    Working with computers and a basic understanding of what they do
•    The Internet and KPN network
•    Email and communication (setting up individual emails)
•    Writing short articles
•    Digital photographs and sending them

In addition, anyone who shows aptitude and would like some technical training will be given some help with basic trouble-shooting and keeping the computers running.

Venues
•    !Khwa ttu
•    Living Landscape
•    Windhoek (TUCSIN)

We are inviting participants from Botswana to the Windhoek workshop, which we hope will be held at TUCSIN where there is computer access, at !Khwa ttu with borrowed laptops, if necessary and at Living Landscape with their existing educational project computers.

Dates
The three-day workshops will be held during July and August. Dates will be fixed very soon.
