School news from Ghanzi in Botswana

2010-07-16 09:29:23

Bana Ba Motlhaba – Southern Cross School (SCS) is a privately funded, pre-school and primary school support program targeting orphaned and vulnerable children in the Ghanzi district of Botswana. The objective is to provide a new, innovative approach for preparing disadvantaged children for primary school, keeping children in school and engaging their caregivers.  SCS will provide a 3-grade pre-school and structured educational and extra-curricular after-school programs targeted at reducing the primary school drop-out rate and improving test scores. SCS’s vision is to reduce the number of street children in Ghanzi by 50% by 2016. Target children are from remote farms, from families that are struggling to integrate into village life, and/or have limited/no direct parental supervision due to the impacts of HIV/AIDS.  SCS will provide programs for parents/caregivers to become engaged in the child’s education and provide programs to engage secondary students in tutoring and mentoring. SCS will enhance the Government’s agenda of improving access, increasing quality, and reducing the cost of education.
