Bihela Sekere is about to finish his master's degree in Development Studies through the new Research Centre for San Studies, which was launched earlier this year.
His childhood was spent in one of Africa's most marginalised communities, among the San Bushmen who were southern Africa's first inhabitants but have faced centuries of exclusion and discrimination. "It was never easy growing up as a San child, especially those who wanted to go school because the nearest school was kilometers away," the 28-year-old said

| Bihela is a strong young San with heart like an oak. He has good ideas and interestingly good thinking skills. He has the capacity to reason and boldly speak out what is in his chest, something rare in many San people. I got to know him and he was very sharing person though growing up in uncomfortable conditions just like the many of us, he has triumphed and reached for significant educational heights. He demonstrates a good example to those of us who have not reached there to become more like him. Job Morris |
